Athletic Coaching and Workout Planning with XPS

We are excited to introduce Matías Suhurt and Julia Wedman, S&C coaches and great XPS users who have launched their own project, Athletic Performance Partners, specializing in individualized athletic training and coaching. To showcase how they incorporate XPS into their daily routines, we are kicking off a series of articles where Matías and Julia will share their insights and experiences, bringing XPS closer to all of our users.

XPS the Right Tool for Athletes to Grow 

XPS Network has been a part of our daily athlete management for team sports for many years. Currently, with our personal project, Athletic Performance Partners, we are expanding its use to individual training and coaching. Whether working with professional or amateur athletes, today’s athletes want to take detailed control of their training processes. That’s why we rely on XPS Network, to provide the tools they need to keep growing and performing at the highest level.

Programming Daily

Creating training programs with XPS Network is an enjoyable and smooth process. First, we ensure that all essential information about the athlete, such as pre-testing data, is entered into the system. Our starting point is always the Athlete’s Calendar View, which provides a clear overview of each individual athlete’s monthly schedule including frequency, time, and type of workout. From there, we can create, edit, move and improve workouts freely, adjusting easily accessible.

The Video Library is a key feature in our individual programming. In addition to XPS´s comprehensive library, we have added over 400 exercise videos over time. This allows us to work with greater flexibility and create highly variable, sport-specific, and customized training plans. Athletes can view each exercise in video format to ensure proper execution and maximize training effectiveness. 

Structuring Effective Workouts 

Our programming will differ depending on the athlete’s level, sport, and specific needs. However, we typically structure workouts in blocks using the text function in XPS. We usually start with a warm-up block focused on mobility and/or activation, followed by the main section— whether it’s supersets, circuits, or stand-alone exercises. This feature allows us to combine exercises in any way we want and add additional information to each block, ensuring clarity in progressions and that the athlete fully understands our programming. 

For each exercise, we specify key details such as the number of reps, sets, rest time and weights when necessary. Another key feature of XPS is the ability to adjust variables for every exercise. This is especially useful when we want to switch exercise from reps to time for an isometric approach. It has also enabled us to program conditioning sessions by easily selecting metrics related to time, pace, distance, or heart rate. This flexibility allows us to create all types of intervals and long-distance running plans, which are particularly valuable for our endurance athletes.

Clear Communication and Athlete Engagement 

One of the standout features of XPS Network is its user-friendly interface, making it easy for athletes to visualize and understand their plans. Direct access to exercise explanations and videos ensures clarity, while the app’s messaging and notification system keeps communication seamless. Athletes stay on track and never miss important updates or adjustments.

Tracking Progress and Enhancing Feedback 

Once an athlete completes their workout, they simply mark it as ‘Completed’ in the app. This action automatically updates our database, allowing us to monitor their progress in real time. As athletes log their actual performed weight, reps, time, or distance, we gain easily accessible and valuable information for future programming. Additionally, each athlete can access reports to track and view their progress, which we find highly valuable when working remotely with individuals. This objective feedback not only helps provide clear results but also keeps athletes motivated to stay committed and work hard. 

In addition, each athlete has his Readiness and Training Load forms. In the morning before training, they fill out their Readiness forms and we, as coaches, can see how they are feeling. Sleep quantity, Sleep Quality, Fatigue and Soreness Level and Motivation, among other things. Also, when the athletes finish training, they easily fill out how demanding the training was between 1-10 and how long the training took, which allows us to see in the Monitoring section how our planning is impacting them.
